I got a pretty cool Christmas present.
My husband gave me the Wisdom Panel 20 Dog Breed Identification DNA Test Kit.
I guess he's tired of listening to my eternal speculation of what the heck my dog might be.
There has been lots of helpful input.
My husband gave me the Wisdom Panel 20 Dog Breed Identification DNA Test Kit.
I guess he's tired of listening to my eternal speculation of what the heck my dog might be.
Ideas I might never come up with on my own.
Of course I have my own theories.
I'd love some input from you guys, but I'm aware you may not think this as much fun as I do. So I'll sweeten the pot. I just ordered my panel. It will take a few weeks to get it, do the test, send it back etc.
I'm going to share some of my research with you, because trying to understand my dog has led me down some fascinating paths about genetics, nature vs. nurture etc. So sporadically over the next month or so, I'll bring up some of this stuff. I'm hoping it will lead to some good discussion that relates to both canines and equines.
Once you think you have an idea of what Brockle might be, send it in through the comments. We'll have a Brockle Decoded pool. The one who comes closest will win this:
This is a print from a fantasy series I drew in the late 70's...stop laughing, we all draw at least one unicorn, right? Anyway, signed and numbered, ya da da da.
I'm planning on waiting to guess until we go through our discussions on ear shape, color, instincts etc. Then I'll leave my answer with the kidlet and we'll see how close I can come too.
OK? Ready, set, GO!

ReplyDeleteHow about one of these, a Panda shepherd.

Only unfortunately I think he might be crossed with something else, and I dont have much of an idea what that might be. But since the Shiloh Shepherd seems to be an American breed still in the making, I bet they are not that "pure" either.
So how about a Panda Shiloh Shepherd.
So cool, Mugs!
ReplyDeleteFirst question, the picture of the sighthound leads me to ask, does Brockle have a true double suspension gallop? As a novice greyhound owner (novice to the greyhound part, not the dog owner part), it is my understanding that only sighthounds exhibit a regular, true, and natural double suspension gallop with full extension and contraction.
Otherwise my money is on bear.
Codi...I have no clue...I'm going to look it up.
ReplyDeleteIt's not very original but I think he looks like perhaps a Belgian Malinois or GSD mixed with an Australian Shepard. We have a Aussie mix that reminds me of brockle in the way he looks but he is very stick/fetch motivated and acts very much like a herding dog.
ReplyDeleteCan you do one post for "official" guesses? Otherwise I bet everyone will change their mind with every new piece of info, lol!
ReplyDeleteAlso, the video is hilarious.
Yes. Changes are fine, then we'll have "last vote day."
ReplyDeleteAww! What a great gift!! Points to Jim for this one ;)
ReplyDeleteI will be interested in the results.
My bet on Brockle is that he is a whole new entity. Just as mystical as your Unicorn and Griffin.
Brockle so much reminds me of my husbands high prey drive GSD, so many of the same attributes from the "nose on my thigh" to the obsessive compulsive behaviors.. the coat and color could be anything so I am going to wing out and say he is GSD and Collie :)
ReplyDeleteGSD and English Shepherd. He's a handsome boy.
ReplyDeleteFirst time poster, long time reader. Thanks for your writing Mugs. Hope the new year brings some good things your way.
Hmmm guessing maybe English shepherd, border collie, and some Australian cattle dog for the interesting ticking markings!
ReplyDeleteGSD, some sort of LGD (anatolian/kangal), splash of sighthound.......you're west so I'm going to say greyhound, and/or deerhound, and collie.
ReplyDeleteSo basically a staghound-GSD-LGD cross
I anticipate my guess flip flopping as more information trickles in. Today, however, I'm going with my initial Brockle inclination, which is a GSD/collie but I feel as though there may be a 3rd element as well. Your Brockle sounds so much like my young collie. I can't tell you how much I've appreciated and enjoyed the dog stories and trainer thoughts, as it's helped me transition to appreciating my young goober instead of wanting to strangle him all the time.
ReplyDeleteJen
Codi, I looked that up - can you imagine if horses ran like that??
ReplyDeleteQuestion...in your post about lurchers, what breed(s) were those other two dogs?
ReplyDeleteI'll go with GSD/collie and add a touch of afghan hound.

ReplyDeleteFun!!!
ReplyDeleteShepherd, Colie, Ibizan Hound.
Great gift!
I have a friend who did the DNA test on her dog. Dog in question looked like a water spaniel of some sort. Or even a large cocker spaniel.
ReplyDeleteThe results made us drop our jaws. The paternal grandsire was an English bull dog. The rest of the paternal side was some terrier and one other breed I cannot remember, except it wasn't spaniel. The entire line on the maternal side was pure Golden Retriever.
I look at that dog everyday and still cannot find English bull dog in there!
So, I'm going to go with the not so obvious: Bull dog!.....lolol
@zebra, haha, they do in some of the old fox hunting paintings and it is hilarious!
ReplyDeleteI really would like that print! I love fantasy and think it is so cool that you are an artist as well as everything else. My wild guess is Alsation/Saluki cross.
ReplyDeletegsd x saluki x great pyreneese..
ReplyDeleteLol, that was before they had moving pictures to figure out how they really run.
ReplyDeleteGonna guess GSD/Aussie mix. Can't wait to find out!
ReplyDeleteHoly crap, you are an artist, too?
ReplyDeleteThat's a lovely print!
It's going to tell you something like a mix of Shar Pei, Pekingese, and Dingo.
ReplyDelete(not much faith do I have in those cheek swab panels)
My guess, based on his attributes, is with the Mali mix crowd. I'm a Jamie Butler echo.
Malinois X Really OCD Border Collie
ReplyDeleteI had a dog who I knew was quarter English Bulldog.. She looked like a brown collie mix. No Bulldog anywhere.
:) I think he is what my Mum would have called a Heinz variety (57 flavours). If you were in Australia I'd guess Scotch Collie / German Coolie / German Shepherd mix.
ReplyDeletezebradrems--I'm not sure which post we're talking
ReplyDeleteThose that noticed the print...
I was actually making a crappy living doing illustration work before I was sucked into making a crappy living as a horse trainer.
mugs, I think zebra means the post from June "New Breeds?" 4 pics: 2 of Brockle and 2 of lurchers
ReplyDeleteLooks like it works to me at least what this lovely dog looks like.

I am still going for the Panda Shepherd, at least half, but I will amend my entry and say the other half might have Collie - and for an outside guess, also some BirdDog - the English Setter colour and the fluffy tail and coat and large size.
ReplyDeleteI dont know much about what you call "BirdDogs" in the USA because Red Setters are renowned for being so dumb, and Brockle is so smart, so maybe he got brains and OCD from Collie and GSD.
