You Get the News First

I thought I'd let you guys know what I'm up to. I have been asked to be the new writer of Fugly Horse of the Day and I accepted.

I don't own the blog, a company in CA(?) bought it, but asked me to write it. I'm going to take a crack at not just keeping it going, but making it my own.

I'll definitely keep going with Mugwump Chronicles and the flavor won't change here. I'm going to also try to be true to Fugly's mission, but in my own way. I don't have it in me to be as in-your-face as Fugly, but I do have some strong opinions and it will be fun to harass a few of the commenters.

It's going to be interesting finding a balance between the two blogs, feel free to call me out if my "Fugly voice" creeps over here.

Exploring Fugly World is going to be quite the challenge, but it's going to be an exciting one.
Wish me luck, I'll 'fess up to who I am over at FHOTD tomorrow.

  2. Awesome! Im looking forward to it. Ill still miss Cathy of course, but I think you will be a good replacement with an interesting new viewpoint.

  3. I knew it! Major congrats, I'm looking forward to seeing more of your snarky side. And I'm still dying to know how that 50 mile race turned out for you and Mort. :-)

  6. I think it is a perfect pick. I look forward to some snark along with the good information and news I have come to expect from FHOTD.

Now, go get the bad guys!

  7. I knew I liked the new writer for a reason. Not to say that I didn't like Cathy's writing. Just that the new writing had a certain flair that was familiar.

  8. I honestly thought to myself, when I read the first post that it reminded me of you. A different feel to the way you write here but clearly something comes through. I was hoping for time to read the comments over there to see what the fuglings dug up on the identity but hadn't had a chance. I'm really excited that someone of your calibre is at the helm. I bet you'll enjoy biting a little harder on that blog.

  9. I knew the last post sounded SOOOO much like you!

Because of the change I was considering unsubscribing, but now I think I'll stick around. I sure hope we still get to hear all the Mort stories!?!

  10. Your "Hasta Manana Compadres" gave you away, 'Mugly'. Congratulations. I think you'll be great.

  11. I had a feeling it was you, and I'm glad I was right :) Congratulations, I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with FHOTD.

  12. I hope I can handle it. Of course the stories will continue, but over here. I'm going to try to keep the two blogs completely separate.
Mort, Sonita, Tally and the training and riding conversations belong to the Chronicles.Mouthy Mondays, treating each other with kindness and respect, it's all ours.
Hopefully if I make people mad at FHOTD it will stay there and not leak over here. I guess we'll play it as it goes.

  13. Congratulations! I don't have horses anymore, but I still read you and Fugly, often.

  14. Wow!

I thought that when Fugs sold the blog it would degenerate into some worthless platform for advertising. How wrong I was.

Generally, I'm a pessimist because it seems the safer option, but sometimes I'm pleasantly surprised!

  15. I really wondered if that was you when I read it. Congrats, I think you'll be wonderful at it! Hope there's a good steady paycheck :)

  16. HAHA - way to go! I knew I liked the new writer and the Hasta Manana sounded kind of familiar. I like Accendors's new moniker for you... "Mugly" :-)

  17. Thought it sounded like you! YAY :]

  18. Awesome! Haven't read the Fugly blog yet, but I'll hop right over there. What a great turn of events for you! I love your writing! But please continue the Mort, etc stories here! :)

    ReplyDelete
  19. Ha! I knew those first few posts had your "voice" in it!

  20. aHAH!! I thought the new Fugly writer sounded suspiciously like our dear Mugs!! Congrats, I think you'll do a great job :)

No holding back on the stories though, I'm still waiting on more Mort chapters, and we still don't know how your nutty little scared mare turns out. Can't wait to read more!

  21. Woo-hoo - double the dose of Mugs, what more could we want?

  22. The one thing that always annoyed me about FHOTD is that she always ranted about training without knowing showing anything beyond the most rudimentary knowledge of it. I guess that criticism just got derailed.

  23. Congrats! Hope this works out well for you. (Thought it was you). I would welcome more umm oversight of the rabid, particularly when someone is trying to rescue/buy a horse in a bad situation, and the rabid are sending upsetting emails to owners. I like Mugwump's descriptor, we play nice. I like playing nice.

  26. Huh -- I'm actually really surprised. One of the reasons I LOVE this blog and check in every day is the quality of the writing here. I mean, I enjoy getting to hear stories from a lot of people during the 'Mouthy Mondays' segment, but I always breathe a sigh of relief when you come back, Mugs, because your writing is such a pleasure to read (I can't help it -- I'm a grad student in English and teach composition for a living).

When I read your first post over at Fugly, I was really disappointed; the 'voice' sounded like a much younger person, and was not as pleasurable to read. I actually considered responding to your comment that blogs are 'virtual barfing on the keys' by pointing you -- ironically -- to this blog as an example of well-written blog posts that were in no way 'virtual barfing,' but were in fact clearly the result of lots of thoughtful writing and revision.

I actually thought to myself: "You know who I'd REALLY like to see writing this blog, now that Cathy's gone? Mugwump. Too bad we have this young hack writer who uses punctuation like a 13-year-old girl instead." I'm laughing at myself now. : )

I do hope that your 'Mugs' voice will contaminate your 'Fugs' voice to some extent, because the control you have over your language here would make for some EXCEPTIONAL snarking and commentary over at the Fugs blog. Having TWO venues for reading Mugs? I'm practically drooling in anticipation.

  27. Fantastic! Congratulations :)

I found your blog through FHotD and love that it's such a pleasure to read without all the drama-lamas of the Fugly blog. I sincerly hope none of the argumentative morons find their way over here.

  28. My first inkling was int the first post: "Just sayin'." I said to myself "That sure sounds familiar..."
Then when you started talking the other day about western pleasure and working cowhorse, and what made me pretty sure was the reference to the Morgan trainer.
Congratulations! I look forward to the newer, kinder FHoTD. Now I've got to decide which moniker I like best: "Fugly 2.0" or "Mugly"?
p.s. Still waiting for the conclusion of Mort's endurance race. Just sayin'.

  29. I never read fugly because the tone turned me off. I'm headed over there now with you at the helm.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I was getting suspicious that it might be you. The writing style was awfully familiar. I'm very pleased. I know you'll do Fugly justice. Does that mean we need you call you Fugwump now?

    ReplyDelete
  31. I KNEW IT!!! I could totally sense that it was the 'mugwump style' of writing within the first post! Congratulations!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Glad to hear it, but I can't say I'm surprised. I can't decide between Mugly and Fugwump. Don't forget about Tally.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Ooh, I like 'Mugly'! 'Fugwump' works too, though.

Re: nasty comments and people getting way too worked up, I won't object to you moderating comments as much as necessary, either here or on FHOTD. It's your party, you can evict the rude guests. (And we'll thank you for it!)

Western Pleasure is a heck of a topic for getting people worked up, though. The longest, loudest arguments that I remember on FHOTD were on that topic, the only other one that approached it was anything that could be interpreted as fat bashing. Nothing like starting with the controversial stuff! Plus, the FHOTD readers have raised misinterpreting other people's opinions to an art form. Good luck riding herd on that crew.

  34. I've never moderated comments over here, but if I have to I will. I like the peaceful thought involved in this blog and intend to maintain it.
I'm gonna lettem rip on Fugly though.
P.S. "Barf on the keys" was a hint as to who I am...I first wrote it over here.

  35. hurrah! When a coupla folks mentioned it on the 'weekend rider' post I thought 'hmm...' and they were right!

    Congrats :)

  36. *LUCK*
    !!!

Good to have you over there.

  37. Congrats Mugs, love the posts on both blogs :)

  38. "Poco Bueno top and bottom," that was a dead ringer. I knew it was you.

I'm a rabid Mort fan, mostly because I have a little bay QH I'm pretty fond of (skipper W, though), and we do wacky, stupid things like midnight solo rides on the training track, nike shorts and cowboy boots riding (I may look dumb, but it's too dang hot here right now for tack!) or pond swimming.
