I've always loved Sam Savitt's illustrations, and his website lists the book - "Vicki and the Black Horse." Yay!

The other book FINALLY popped into my head this morning when I was in that halfway world between awake and asleep - "Prairie Lady" (originally "Prairie Wind").

Both are available on Amazon and a few other sites. I was the second to last stop on the bus route. The horse that ran by the bus to and from school every day was a gray with dark points. I think that was because I was enamored with Ladys Secret, a daughter of Secretariat that I watched win her Breeders Cup race. One of my favorite books was Can I Get There By Candlelight by Jean Slaughter Doty, and Candlelight was a gray, as well. I still have a soft spot for grays.

My fantasy horses weren't usually from books, but living not far from Bob Avila's place, I had many a fantasy about Smoke Um Okie, Peppy Badger Chex and Lean With Me. I remember the first time I saw a horse really spin. It was at Sport Laughlin's dispersal sale in the 80s. I was about 8 years old. Bob rode a stud into the ring named Frosted Major and put him into a spin. I was pretty wide-eyed, and with my 4-H background I just couldn't believe a horse could do a haunch turn so fast! I'll never forget that. I love reiners and cow horses to this day, and someday I'll have the means to get in the ring!Khttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06165448428797260605noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4380534023229200743.post-74218008015121756382010-02-11T08:56:22.323-07:002010-02-11T08:56:22.323-07:00Ah, I forgot Mr Ed! Maybe someone here will remember them?

1) A girl named Pat and a black Thoroughbred. Or maybe the horse was Pat?? Dang. It starts with the girl seeing the horse tangled in barbed wire during a snowstorm. The girl bends and bends the wire until it breaks while the horse waits patiently.

2) Young girl on a ranch rescues a Mustang filly, trains her, and rides in a gymkhana, beating out the fancy horses in the barrel race.

"Black Beauty" has always made me remember to think of how my horse feels about what I'm doing. And of course The Black. droool! I forget what the book was called, but it was about two children who's parents decided to move to the country, and they saw this fat pony in the field and would go and visit every day. The little girl who owned the pony didn't want it, so they convinced the grandma to give Noodles to them and brought him home to their farm. He was a fat hairy Shetland I think, the kind that has an enormous forlock and big brown eyes that peer out from under all that hair, begging for a carrot.
